The weekend forecast threatened force 5 or 6, occasionally 7 with showers, and leaving the berth for the first race Saturday, wind instruments were already reading 22kts and a few reefs were seen. The strong south westerly also produced a slight chop in the bay which added to the challenging conditions. Conditions like these may well have put off a number of boats from coming to the start line but this year saw a new competitor, Predator, an impressive Beneteau First 50, bravely sailed very short handed. Saturday escaped with just a light shower but Sunday developed into a very wet day and saw the wind veer round to the North West. Although the gradient strength had not dropped, the direction produced some wind holes and severe wind shifts around the course. Wind speeds around the course varied between 24 or 25 kts down to just 8 or 9 in certain areas of the bay. Mojito took first place over the weekend, increasingly challenged by Poppy, followed by Predator, who were reducing the gap on the leaders with every race. This weekend held just the first four races out of twelve for the Pwllheli Challenge Series and with four discards, the battle hasn’t even started, so there is still plenty of time to take up the challenge! |
