Bore Da - Good Morning

Welcome to this March Edition of our e-newsletter.

It's great to see improving weather, boats being launched and generally more activity around the harbour.

The harbour entrance dredging seems to be going well, and the channel depth was consistent when I transited  up it earlier in the week. We understand from Gerwyn Owen, Hafan Commercial Manager, that targeted dredging of the harbour will commence in May.

The club is busy organising the IRC Welsh National Championships that take place in May. We thank those that have volunteered to help run this important regatta. Entries for both IRC and Cruisers are invited at:

IRC 40Years of Racing

The racing marks are now laid, with Club and ISORA racing commencing at Easter.

Whilst talking about racing I pay tribute to Brian Metcalf, a long term member of our race management team who passed away recently, we will miss Brian's calm voice on the radio and the help he gave Robin running club and ISORA race starts and finishes. Brian's funeral will be held at Bangor Crematorium on April 2nd at midday, with a funeral tea in Plas Heli after.

The Club AGM is scheduled for 10am on Saturday March 30th with tea, coffee and breakfast rolls available from the Cafe-Bar - see the formal notice on the club website, and at the end of the newsletter.

The club is hosting a start of season party in Plas Heli on Sunday 31st March, with live music and a variety of food offerings including curries and chillies. All are welcome, and this is a chance to discuss cruising, racing and boating plans for the forthcoming season.

Party
Party!

There is a race officer training weekend being hosted by SCYC on the weekend of 13/14th April -  Saturday is for those wishing to learn how to assist with club racing management, and Sunday is a regional race officer course, being run by the RYA.

Please contact SCYC for further information by emailing  if either of these training days are of interest.

‍Annual General Meeting 2024

Membership Renewal: - Please help us by renewing your membership early.

Membership fees are due on 1st January, however as in previous years, we have allowed benefits to be extended to the end of February.

Dinghy Compound Storage - The CHPSC dinghy section is growing year on year, and the storage compound is available for the storage of members' dinghies.  If you already have a dinghy in the compound, now is a great time to renew your membership and pay for your annual storage. Please just visit the website (link above) and add the appropriate storage fee to your membership.

As the new season approaches, we are planning a tidy up of the compound as part of the annual maintenance and will be allocating the storage spaces for members dinghies that have been paid for.

There are now a number of dinghies that have been unpaid and unclaimed for a considerable time, (in some cases a few years!) and this spring, we will be asking their owners to ensure these are removed to make way for members dinghies, as this is a popular club benefit and resource. Any unclaimed dinghies after this point will be disposed of, so please help us by making contact with your intentions!

The codes to the dinghy compound have been changed and will only be issued to members who have paid for storage as a means of increasing security.

Please feel free to contact us if you wish to remove your dinghy and we can arrange access for you to do so!

Commodore's Invitational Regatta

Monday 1 July - Wednesday 3 July 2024

Great News!

Clwb Hwylio Pwllheli Sailing Club has been invited to compete in the Royal Yacht Squadron’s Commodores Invitational again.

The racing will be in chartered J70’s in the Solent over three days. (July 1-3,2024)

The club has accepted the invitation and is now looking to put together a competitive crew to represent not only Pwllheli but also Wales.

George Bird-Jones will be managing the team and would like any interested parties to notify the flag officers of their interest.

Training and practice will be carried out at Plas Heli over the coming months to establish the best candidates.

PLAS HELI NEWS

Plas Heli Cyf – The Welsh National Sailing Academy and Event Centre, a volunteer not for profit distribution community enterprise company, with charitable aims and where all surpluses are reinvested back into the facility for everyone's benefit.

Plas Heli
Plas Heli

2‍024 promises to be another great year for Plas Heli with many great events lined up including the IRC Welsh National Championship, SuperNova Nationals, the GP14 World Championship, IOCA Nationals, Welsh and Junior Championships, and an ILCA Qualifier Event in September 2024.

We are continuing with our program of improvements to compliment those already undertaken.

Landscaping work has been undertaken around Caban Heli and we hope to further develop this site with commercial opportunities.

The perimeter flags have been purchased ready for the 2024 season - these make a significant improvement to the site appearance.

We have more landscaping projects in the pipeline including work on Cei Heli and a new security barrier access to Cei Heli for our pontoon customers.

Plas Heli Pontoon customers now have the use of shower cabins in Caban Heli with additional works being carried out this winter.

We continue to work closely with RYA CW to provide facilities for training camps, storage, and activities, and we respect the strategic importance of the facilities for events, training and boating in Wales.

Community engagement works continues and included our work with clubs and associations, assistance with facilities for a disability boat, fundraising events, classrooms for community groups, meetings, teaching and our work with children in-need.

Catering at the centre is with our franchisee operator Sean Devlin Ltd. The service is growing in reputation, and they have built a good name for quality and customer experience.

We are reliant on volunteers and are of course, grateful for all assistance provided by our stakeholder groups and clubs and in particular the Commodore and Flag Officers of Clwb Hwylio Pwllheli Sailing Club.

Challenges for 2024 include energy costs and shower and toilet provision for the growing events and training portfolio.
