Bore Da - Good Morning

Welcome to this June Edition of the CHPSC e-newsletter.

It’s certainly good to report some great sailing with much improved weather in the last few weeks, and particularly pleasing to see our youth section CHIPAC back on the water training our young sailors. This year CHIPAC are entering a newly acquired GP14 into the world championships, being held here in August.

I am indebted to the volunteers who work so hard - both on and off the water to make this activity happen for our young members.

Former CHIPAC sailors comprise three of the four crew who are racing a J70 in July at Cowes, in the Royal Yacht Squadron “Commodores Challenge” - CHPSC is one of 13 clubs invited to take part once again in this prestigious event. George Bird-Jones is team manager, and we wish the team the best of luck.

Talking of CHIPAC, the trusty grey Ferguson tractor is in the process of being sold, and it is hoped that we can replace it with something more appropriate to tackle the sand on its way out to recover the dinghies.

It was very sad to report the passing of Ruth in March. Bohdan and the family invite everyone to a celebration of Ruth’s life in Plas Heli from 3pm on July 27th.

‍Further information can be found at:

May saw some great results for our club members racing in the ISORA offshore series, with a 2nd place for Jac Y Do in the Dun Laoghaire  to Pwllheli race, and 1st and 2nd for Jackknife and Mojito respectively in the return race to Dun Laoghaire, with other club boats also scoring well - the club is well on its way to retaining the Irish Sea trophy for the best performing club in ISORA.

The IRC Welsh National Championships was completed mid-May and congratulations to Thiea winning the cruiser class, and to Old School, Expletive, Jackpot and Mojito taking podium positions in the IRC classes.

Next year's provisional dates are 2-4th May - Further information can be found at www.ircwelshchamps.com

The club regatta is planned for the weekend of the 29th/30th June, and we hope to get more information out soon regarding both on and off the water activities, and also the plan to welcome the “Smith Brothers” ALB back to Pwllheli on Sunday 30th June.

In May, I had the great privilege, along with Gerallt Williams and Stephen Tudor, of having a meeting with Roger Smith who made the donation that funded the Shannon ALB, and he was very impressed with Plas Heli, our club activities, and the harbour in general, and could see the  attraction to the class associations holding event here.

I hope those embarking on cruises, or just day sailing or motor boating round the bay, enjoy safe and enjoyable boating, and for those socialising in Plas Heli a relaxing time with friends, enjoying the now improved views of the harbour entrance, and of Tremadog bay and Eryri beyond.

Good luck to Finally, Faenol, Jezebel and Pata Negra competing in the Round Ireland Race later this month - follow the race on the yellow brick tracker.

I look forward to seeing you all very soon.

Dinghy Compound Storage

The CHPSC dinghy section is growing year on year, and the storage compound is available for the storage of members' dinghies.  If you already have a dinghy in the compound, now is a great time to renew your membership and pay for your annual storage. Please just visit the website (link above) and add the appropriate storage fee to your membership.

As the new season approaches, we are planning a tidy up of the compound as part of the annual maintenance and will be allocating the storage spaces for members dinghies that have been paid for.

There are now a number of dinghies that have been unpaid and unclaimed for a considerable time, (in some cases a few years!) and this spring, we will be asking their owners to ensure these are removed to make way for members dinghies, as this is a popular club benefit and resource. Any unclaimed dinghies after this point will be disposed of, so please help us by making contact with your intentions!

The codes to the dinghy compound have been changed and will only be issued to members who have paid for storage as a means of increasing security. Please feel free to contact us if you wish to remove your dinghy and we can arrange access for you to do so!

PLAS HELI NEWS

Plas Heli Cyf – The Welsh National Sailing Academy and Event Centre, a volunteer not for profit distribution community enterprise company, with charitable aims and where all surpluses are reinvested back into the facility for everyone's benefit.

Plas Heli
Plas Heli

We have had a great start to 2024 with two of the eight events already completed!

The next event is the SuperNova Nationals at the end of the month. We are looking for volunteers on and off the water. Please contact us if you are able to assist. We intend running training courses for on the water volunteers - please keep an eye on the web site for more information.

In July we host the Laser Welsh Championship, then in August the IOCA (Optimist) Nationals and the GP14 World Championship. The Welsh and Junior Championships, and an ILCA Qualifier Event in September 2024.

We are continuing with our program of improvements to compliment those already undertaken.

The landscaping works on the Plas Heli grounds are ongoing and the improved appearance is complimented by many. You will have noticed that we have completed the work of reprofiling the dunes, this has enhanced the views from the Café Bar.

The glass in the front door was damaged and we are now working on a plan to replace the two sliding doors. We will keep you informed on the progress made.

The CCTV wiring has now been extended to the pontoons and we hope that this will be operational very soon, along with the new WiFi for the pontoons.

We have also instructed contractors to extend the fence around the pontoon gate to increase security.

The VersaDock was damaged in a recent storm, and we are now waiting for contractors to stitch the remaining portions together, and remove and recycle the damage sections which are now on the quayside.

The perimeter flags have been purchased ready for the 2024 season - these make a significant improvement to the site appearance.

The crane has been a big benefit to the Centre, and we hope to see growth in the sports boats fleet in 2024.There have been substantial upgrades to the fleet of 12 RIBs and race management equipment.

We have more landscaping projects in the pipeline including work on Cei Heli and a new security barrier access to Cei Heli for our pontoon customers.

Plas Heli Pontoon customers now have the use of shower cabin in Caban Heli with additional upgrade works ongoing, we hope that the other shower cabin will be available very soon.

We continue to work closely with RYA CW to provide facilities for training camps, storage, and activities, and we respect the strategic importance of the facilities for events, training and boating in Wales and in the UK.

Community engagement works continues and included our work with clubs and associations, assistance with facilities for a disability boat, fundraising events, classrooms for community groups, meetings, teaching and our work with children in-need.

We are reliant on volunteers and are of course, grateful for all assistance provided by our stakeholder groups and clubs and in particular the Commodore and Flag Officers of Clwb Hwylio Pwllheli Sailing Club.

There is more about Plas Heli in the updated Plas Heli - Prospectus
