The Welsh Government’s proposals for Highly Protected Marine Reserves in Tremadog Bay are the subject of public consultation until 31 July 2012. Taken literally, they are a threat to all our recreational boating (by sail or motor) by restricting navigation, anchoring, mooring, mark laying, fishing and extend to not being able to walk on the beach!

If you have not looked at the proposals there is a good summary on the RYA website that has a link to the Welsh Government (WG) document itself. RYA asks that we all write to the WG about our experience and knowledge of the area to help inform a decision at the next stage. A ‘No Go Zone’ will affect your cruising routes westward, your quiet anchorages off Llanbedrog, your casual mackerel fishing and your local suppliers of marine and other services.
The Club will be responding to the consultation expressing our concern about the adverse impact on our activities and the consequences for local businesses.
Llanbedrog Community Council has arranged a public meeting on 14 June at Ysgol Glan y Mor, Pwllheli at 19.00hrs to which WG and CCW (Countryside Council for Wales) officials will attend and answer questions.

If you are concerned you should write a letter to Lindsey Powles, Marine Branch, Welsh Government, Cathays Park, Cardiff CF10 3NQ - copying it to your local MP and your Assembly Member if you live in Wales.

Volume of objections and politicians’ postbags will indicate the strength of feeling about this proposal and its potential adverse impact on our boating, coastal tourism and local marine businesses.
