  Member Spotlight - Richard Tudor

Former CHPSC commodore, current club management committee member and Plas Heli director, Richard is a two times round the world yachtsman, skippering twice during the Chay Blyth managed "British Steel Challenge" round the world yacht race, with largely amateur crews and a professional skipper; racing west about (against the prevailing wind). The race was  known as "the worlds toughest yacht race" for very good reasons!

A former professional yachtsman, Richard  remains a current inshore and offshore sailor competing in everything from club fun races to ISORA and RORC offshore events, approaching each with the same level of skill  experience and dedication, and always encouraging those around him.

In December 1992, having had one leg win to Rio De Janeiro and seriously challenging for the 1992 round the world race podium, Richards 67' maxi "British Steel II" was dismasted in the cruel Southern Pacific Ocean. Below is an account from the Independent newspaper, demonstrating Richards skills in getting his yacht and crew safely to port, and able to continue the race.

"The charmed life of the 10 amateur-crewed yachts sailing round the world in the British Steel Challenge was given a severe jolt yesterday when the sponsor's own yacht, British Steel II, was dismasted deep in the southern Pacific Ocean. None of the crew were injured as the rigging screw on the starboard lower shroud failed, causing the 85ft mast to break at deck level.

Most of the rigging had to be cut away and the mast with the mainsail and headsails still attached dumped in the water, as the crew also coped with big seas and strong westerly winds.

The skipper, Richard Tudor, was able to salvage the boom and, as he began to turn north away from the dangers of icebergs, he reported that they required no assistance, although other yachts had offered to go to their aid or to donate food for what will now be a much longer passage at sea. He feels he has enough food, and enough diesel to run the fresh-water maker for the three to four weeks before reaching port.

Tudor is fortunate that his communications have not been wrecked as he was able, via the duty yacht, to contact race control in England within 12 minutes of the incident. He rejected the option of returning to Chile and plans to set up a jury rig, possibly using a spinnaker pole aa mast, and to use the storm trysail and jib to begin the long slog to New Zealand 2,400 miles away.

In 1998  Richard also skippered a Trimaran in the incredible "Three Peaks Yacht Race", setting a record time  of 2 days 3 hours and 4 minutes that still stands today.  The  video of this race can be viewed here

March 2000,  Richard was also a crew member on "Team Phillips" - Pete Goss's round the word record challenging Trimaran, for sure a forerunner of todays huge record breaking Ultims - Richard again demonstrating incredible seamanship when the trimaran suffered structural failure during the Atlantic during sea trials . The video about Team Phillips can be seen here

"Back to Boating" - Task Force Update

Vice Commodore Gerallt Williams, our Task Force leader reported as follows:

"Track and Trace" is an essential element of our back to boating protocol, and one that is mandated for the leisure sector by Welsh Government. We have two track and trace email addresses, one for the Bar as highlighted below (Mae'r cyfeiriad e-bost hwn wedi'i warchod rhag robotiaid sbam. Rhaid i chi alluogi JavaScript i'w weld.) and one for the compound and pontoons (Mae'r cyfeiriad e-bost hwn wedi'i warchod rhag robotiaid sbam. Rhaid i chi alluogi JavaScript i'w weld.) - it only takes a few seconds with a smart phone to record your visit, this helps us comply with COVID regulations, and you are assured we  operate strict data protection protocols.

* If you are, or intend being a user of the Plas Heli pontoons, please read and adhere to the pontoon protocols which are available here *

* If you are, or intend being a user of the Plas Heli compound for dinghy sailing, please read and adhere to the Plas Heli compound protocol - available here *
