Could you sail across the Atlantic Ocean on your own in a small boat? It amounts to six or seven week's solitary confinement on the open ocean with nothing but work and excitement.
That's The Jester Challenge
The Jester Challenge is for single handed Corinthian sailors in boats of under 30 feet. Every fourth year (i.e. 2010,2014) it is from Plymouth to Newport, Rhode Island USA and in between (2008,2012) it is from Plymouth to the Azores. This year 2013 they are running special 250nm Jester Challenges to Baltimore SW Ireland. The idea is to provide an opportunity during a normal summer leave allowance for new hands to cut their teeth in preparation for longer distances challenges and for old Jester hands to get together.
One sailor from Pwllhli has completed the 2008, 10 & 12 Jester Challenges and each time he was only one from this area. Pwllheli to Baltimore is by coincidence the same distance as Plymouth to Baltimore so to give local sailors an opportunity he requested a start from Pwllheli which will take place on the start line of the Celtic Regatta 16 June
