We had a good slot by the marina and checked about 60 life jackets and chatted to 100 people or so.

About 70% of the jackets had out of date firing mechanisms, they would most likely have worked but it goes to show that people don't know what to check.

Also about 50% didn't have crotch straps and that's a shame as a jacket is inclined to float up if you don't use these, making for a very poor fit if and when you need it to keep you head above water !!!
