CHPSC News:

After a night of rain, the skies cleared for the 2020 "Pwllheli Regatta" races last Saturday, with the IRC class starting a 13 mile race at 10:45 with a beat to the West End mark and then on to an SCYC mark SW of Llanbedrog (with thanks to SCYC for  permission), followed by a run to  PSC 10 near Pen Y Chain,  and back to the finish. With a steady 10 kt breeze this class was won by Stephen Williams  "Darling XX" from Andrew Hall "Jackknife", with 6 boats competing.

In NHC three boats competed starting at 11:00 with a PSC  9-mile "fixed marks" course set,  with a windward/leeward track followed by a triangular lap, this class was won by Alan Barton "Induna" ahead of Dave Sharp in "Blue Sky" - A pleasant couple of hours racing, and the regatta trophies will be awarded at the Christmas Ball.

Thanks to the course setting group (Mark, Sam and Glenn) and race management, including final course tweaking , by Robin and Eilir Evans

Planning for the "Stripped Down" Spinlock IRC Welsh National Championships continues, and entries are invited as early as possible, so we can manage both the pontoons and catering arrangements at Plas Heli. Full details, entry forms and useful resources  at the event website here   It promises to be three great days of racing in Tremadog bay.

CHIPAC  (Clwb Hwylio Ieuenctid Pwllheli A'r Cylch) - our youth sailing section - have finished their preparations and protocols following the lockdown, and start their 2020 activities tonight. With high water at 18:00 there should be good views of our young sailors training  in the bay from the Plas Heli balcony. These young sailors are the future of the sport we enjoy, and its so rewarding to support them.

It is with great sadness we mark the passing of Don Thatcher - the Club burgee is at half-mast.  Don was Commodore of Clwb Hwylio Pwllheli Sailing Club from 1984 to 1985. With his wife Rita and family, they were active members of the club for many years, sailing their Moody 30, Don Phillipe.

Don was a committee member when the move from the first Club House to the second home - the club on the beach near Gimblet Rock and was involved with the  fund raising efforts to build the club, and even getting the family to help out with tileing the toilets and painting walls, a real team effort.

He was part of the welcoming party for King Constantine of Greece visit to open the club and was also involved in the early ISORA races in P Pwllheli.  Don was 90 when he passed away and held lots of happy memories of his time at CHPSC

Flags3CHPSC News:

With fine weather last weekend, many members took advantage of the easing of travel restrictions and enjoyed some great sailing and time on the water. Fantastic to see the bay full of activity.

An ad hoc "race rally" was devised for Saturday the 11th, and in a gentle 8 kts NW breeze, a fleet of 9 boats took part in a race around St Tudwal's/Carreg Y Trai, which also qualified for the commodore's challenge. "Jackknife" won the overall and class 1, with second overall and winner of class 2 "Pastime of Hamble".  A very enjoyable race for the shorthanded and solo crews, in champagne sailing conditions. Race report here

The Flag Offices held meetings with RYA Cymru Wales to influence Government regulations and provide our recommendations for the boating sector.

Planning for the "Stripped Down" IRC Welsh Nationals continues, following a Zoom meeting with the RYA and Race Management from the Royal Dee Yacht Club who co-host the event with us. An updated notice of race will be published next week.

Flags3CHPSC News:

A race around the "Tremadog Triangle" took place on Saturday the 18th July in a gentle 6 kt Northerly breeze with clearing skys after a day of rain. The 5pm start due to tides worked well,  and 6 boats came to the line.  "Jackknife" won the race in IRC with "No idea" winning the NHC class.  On Sunday two members completed laps of the Tremadog Triangle - "Theia" and "Sea Minx"  who now heads the NHC leader board. "Jac Y Do"  continues to lead the IRC  fleet. "Theia"  also completed a lap of the Commodores Challenge (St Tuds islands and Carreg Y Trai) and leads the NHC class with an excellent time of 1hr 48 mins corrected.

Planning for the "Stripped Down" Spinlock IRC Welsh National Championships  continues with a "Zoom" meeting of the club racing committee held last Sunday evening.  After confirming the proposed plans,  the event was "re-booted" with a newsletter going out with all the details, and a much reduced price structure. There will be racing for all types of boat, including Cruisers, IRC Class 1 and 2  inshore  and ISORA coastal courses, with race management considering  the shorthanded crews when setting courses - expect less races per day and longer legs. The "stripped down" championship was published in the UK, Irish and European yachting press on Thursday.  ( Yachts and Yachting, Afloat  and EuroSail)  -  Full details at the event website here

CHIPAC  (Clwb Hwylio Ieuenctid Pwllheli A'r Cylch) our youth sailing section have nearly finished their preparations and protocols following the lockdown, and start their 2020 activities next Friday, which is a credit to the hard work put in by Gwyndaf, Jane and James - and many more.  We look forward to seeing young sailors training next week. It's been great seeing more members back in  Pwllheli since  the relaxation of travel restrictions , and we look forward to welcoming more members this weekend,  as  self contained accommodation is opened up. See below for the latest information regarding our home -  Plas Heli

With further easing of restrictions expected to be announced today, we will provide an update  on the club website on Monday, 13th July should there be any significant changes, and  after the RYA has had an opportunity to update their guidance.
