B‍ore Da - Good Morning

Welcome to this February Edition of the Flag Officers e-newsletter.

As we move into February and the days are getting longer, here is our e-newsletter to highlight a few of our planned activities and latest club news.

Tonight, Friday February 3rd, the bar re-opens in Plas Heli after Sean and Kellie’s winter break. Please call in and join us for “early doors” refreshments. You can also collect your club calendar, and there are still a few hard copies of the 2022 year book available.

Tomorrow we are showing both Six Nations Rugby Games on the big TVs, with Wales v Ireland at 14:15 and England v Scotland to follow.

Half time snacks during the Wales v Ireland games and draught beer promotions! It will be great to see members gathering for this social event again.

‍It is my great pleasure to inform you that our Club has been honoured with an invitation from the Commodore of the Royal Yacht Squadron (Cowes) to take part in a 12 boat invitational regatta racing a fleet of J70's for the Southampton Cup, with racing organised by the RYS and based at the iconic facilities at the castle in Cowes.

The invitation letter addressed to CHPSC Commodore from the Royal Yacht Squadron Commodore, The Hon Sir James Holman, promised great racing and also fun ashore.

CHPSC is one of only 14 Clubs invited to take part in this three-day event in early July 2023.

We have already confirmed our intent to take part in this event, and we now invite 'expressions of interests' from our members to form a CHPSC Team. We anticipate a mixed gender crew of four, preferably including a youth member.

There will be some financial assistance for youth members who become part of our team.

Follow the link for more information, dates and a list of invited clubs.

‍Please use the red link below to send an email with your ,expression of interest' to CHPSC Commodore.

With seven significant National Championships in the 2023 Events Schedule, Plas Heli and CHPSC will be looking for volunteers, particularly safety boat cover.

We recognise that some PB2 holders may be a little rusty, so a refresher weekend is planned.

Dates to be announced soon to cover all aspects of launch/recovery of the ribs, practice at boat handling, and suggested safety boat protocols.

This will be free of charge, with the expectation that members taking part in refresher training will likely volunteer for some events. We also plan a PB2 course, this will be over two weekend days in March and will have limited places. This course will be available to members at half the commercial price, again with the expectation that the participants will volunteer for at least two events.

Plas Heli is running an RYA First Aid course on the 25th of March.

For further details contact the commodore using the red contact button below.

Please send an e-mail to the Commodore (link in the red link button below) to register an expression of interest for either of the courses.

Congratulations to Andrew Hall and the Pata Negra team, who completed a class win, and 5th overall in the RORC transatlantic race last weekend, after 13 days and 23 hours at sea. A tough race and we look forward to hearing all about it when the crew return to Pwllheli.

Ian Herbert-Jones has now departed Hobart where he anchored off, adjacent to the mandatory crossing gate, and has now resumed his GGR round the world race. Un-assisted stops are allowed, as long as the skipper stays on the boat, and nothing is taken on or off. Ian is current 5th and now heads to Cape Horn, and then the long climb back up the Atlantic, and we follow his progress keenly on the tracker.  Further information here.

Mike White - Bellone - has arrived in St Lucia, and his next destination in March is towards the Azores. Anyone interested in joining Mike as crew, please email the Commodore (use the link in the button above) and we will forward the details to Mike.

The flags flew at half-mast last weekend to mark the passing of Brian Edmonds, a loyal and popular member of the club for many years, and former treasurer of the PMBHA. Our thoughts are with Mary and Brian’s family at this sad time.

Membership renewal details are below, please help support the club by renewing early.

Next month we hope to provide more details of both boating and social events planned at Easter, including our AGM - see notice below. Anybody available to help organise these social events please contact our Vice Commodore, Lyndsay Harrold, at the Flag Officers email below.

We have been busy over the winter planning and preparing for the 2023 season with upgrades to the fleet of 10 RIBs, increasing our site capacity for camping and pontoons.

You will notice more ground-works ongoing in the main compound, and shortly in the Quayside area. This work will include, but not limited to the following:

Main Compound

Work started:

  • Extra and improved positioning of water taps and drains.
  • Additional WiFi distribution points.
  • Additional CCTV coverage.
  • More camping hook-ups.
  • Conduit for PA System.
  • Re-routing the electricity supply to the hub.

Quayside

To start soon:

  • Complete the works on the central compound.
  • Additional WiFi distribution points.
  • Additional CCTV coverage.
  • Additional Camping hook-ups.
  • Conduit for PA System.
  • Electricity supply for the crane.
  • Camping waste point.

‍The above works will also facilitate our project to provide CCTV and WiFi on the Plas Heli Pontoons.

There are also a few extra landscaping projects for this year.

We hope to have all planned projects completed before the first 2023 event.

Our utility costs have escalated in a most alarming way and we look at all members and guests to be careful with their use of electricity and water.

If you want to help by being a volunteer email CHPSC Commodore above or Plas Heli below.

CHIPAC - YOUTH SAILING

Your CHIPAC organisers and instructors are already hard at work, busy planning our best season so far!

Congratulations to Mike Thorpe who has recently gained his Keelboat Instructor and Racing coach qualifications and is keen to implement all his new skills by introducing an exciting new racing plan for the year ahead.

This will include two handed racing, in RS Fevas, with the plan to enter a CHIPAC team in the RS Feva Nationals, taking place in Pwllheli in May.
