B‍ore Da - Good Morning

Welcome to this March Edition of the Flag Officers e-newsletter.

Plas Heli has been very busy recently, with members and visitors gathering to watch the six nations matches, enjoy the hospitality and facilities, and plan the new seasons activities.

A busy weekend of dinghy training took place last weekend with four separate groups from all over the UK in attendance. We also welcomed Clwb Hwylio Y Felinheli - Porth Dinorwic Sailing Club for Feva training, and the Techno WindFoil class who visited ahead of a proposed world championship.

Everyone enjoyed an excellent weekend on the water, with great sailing conditions.

We still have some places on the safety boat refresher day on 19th March - a chance for both potential volunteers and current volunteers to meet and have some training on the event ribs. We also have one place on a discounted RYA PB2 course on the weekend 25/26th March - this is aimed at potential volunteers, and further discounted for a youth member.

RYA First Aid course - this course is recommended for all that cruise and race offshore, or participate in events - we are holding a course here in Plas Heli on March 25th, discounted for members.

For further information on any of the training courses, please contact commodore@pwllhelisailingclub.co.uk to reserve a place.

We are very pleased to see the growth of the sports boat fleet, facilitated by the club working with Plas Heli to provide the infrastructure allowing a fleet to flourish, and provide a great opportunity for youth sailors to move from CHIPAC and ultimately onto keelboats. It looks like a fleet of 5 could potentially compete for the sports boat cup this year.

With two more “six nations” rugby weekends to look forward to in March, it will soon be Easter and more people will turn their attention to sailing.

Rugby

We are holding an informal “tuning weekend” over the Easter bank holiday, a chance for cruising and racing boats to go out and check everything ahead of the new season, with some light hearted short races around the marks planned.

For further details contact Vicky Cox at racing@pwllhelisailingclub.co.uk

It is with sadness we mark the passing of Cedric Selby a loyal member of CHPSC. Many will remember Cedric for his exploits in offshore racing in Jalma.

Please see the Local Notice to Mariners regarding the on-going Harbour Entrance dredging -  link

There is an article on the CHPSC web sote about the successes of Jamie Carr on his cross Atlantic row as part of the Talisker Chjallenge - here

That’s it for this week, the restaurant and bar is open all weekend, with bookings advised for the Sunday carvery.

Please see the menu and opening hours on the club website at www.pwllhelisailingclub.co.uk

We look forward to seeing you over the next few weeks, and the 2023 calendars are available for collection from the Flag Officers over the forthcoming weekends, and of course at the Club AGM on Saturday April 8th.

Other events planned for this year include a car rally and an artisan market.

We have been busy over the winter planning and preparing for the 2023 season with upgrades to the fleet of 10 RIBs, increasing our site capacity for camping and pontoons.

You will notice more ground-works ongoing in the main compound, and shortly in the Quayside area. This work will include, but not limited to the following:

Main Compound

Work almost completed:

  • Extra and improved positioning of water taps and drains.
  • Additional WiFi distribution points.
  • Additional CCTV coverage.
  • More camping hook-ups.
  • Conduit for PA System.
  • Re-routing the electricity supply to the hub.

Quayside

To started:

  • Complete the works on the central compound.
  • Additional WiFi distribution points.
  • Additional CCTV coverage.
  • Additional Camping hook-ups.
  • Conduit for PA System.
  • Electricity supply for the crane.
  • Camping waste point.

‍The above works will also facilitate our project to provide CCTV and WiFi on the Plas Heli Pontoons.

There are also a few extra landscaping projects for this year.

We hope to have all planned projects completed before the first 2023 event.

Our utility costs have escalated in a most alarming way and we look at all members and guests to be careful with their use of electricity and water. Please refer to the Fair Use Policy.

If you want to help by being a volunteer email CHPSC Commodore above or Plas Heli below.

CHIPAC - YOUTH SAILING

Your CHIPAC organisers and instructors are already hard at work, busy planning our best season so far!

Congratulations to Mike Thorpe who has recently gained his Keelboat Instructor and Racing coach qualifications and is keen to implement all his new skills by introducing an exciting new racing plan for the year ahead.

This will include two handed racing, in RS Fevas, with the plan to enter a CHIPAC team in the RS Feva Nationals, taking place in Pwllheli in May.

Of course, we will also be running our highly acclaimed beginners courses, starting as soon as the weather allows.

Please ensure your child reserves their place by contacting Lyndsay Harrold on flag.officers@pwllhelisailingclub.co.uk and we will be in touch soon with all the details of our new season!
