Clwb Hwylio Pwllheli Sailing Club (CHPSC) and Coleg Meirion Dwyfor (CMD) have organised and prepared a scheme to provide two College students with high quality work experience at CHPSC a National Centre of Sailing Excellence.
Students in the Marine Engineering Department of the College applied for a placement under the scheme and were interviewed by Gareth Roberts, the Event Manager at CHPSC.
The successful students, Kayleigh Hughes and Gareth Lees, have now started on the planned programme of activities.
This work experience will allow them to gain valuable skills and provides them with an opportunity to work in the marine sector. On successful completion of the college course the students will attain skills to enable them to work in the marine sector locally or nationally. The transferable skills will also enable them to seek work in other engineering fields.
CHPSC have been fortunate to receive grant funding from the Reardon Smith Trust to enable the Club to provide maritime opportunities for youngsters.
Eifion Owen , Head of engineering CMD said 'We are very pleased to be part of this scheme as it allows young people to take advantage of the expertise we have locally and allows them to fully develop their own skills to make them more employable in the future"
Stephen Tudor for Pwllheli Sailing Club commented 'the work experience will provide excellent opportunities for the students and I think they will enjoy the variety of work and tasks especially during the busy championships. Their duties will provide them with time on the water in the event support boats. The Sailing Club will host six major sailing events this summer including two World Championships. We are very fortunate to have the support of the Reardon Smith Trust.'
This scheme shows that CHPSC ,CMDÂ and the Reardon Smith trust are working in close partnerships in developing young people to fully realise their skills and ambitions to work in the marine engineering sector.
