Meteorological Autumn starts at the end of the week but before you pack up all your sailing gear, it’s time to enjoy the last of the good weather in The Pwllheli Autumn Challenge Series.
Starting on Saturday 7th September, the series is run every other weekend for 4 weekends with 2 races each day on the following dates:
7th&8th September
21st&22nd September
5th&6th October
19th&20th October
Although tide dependant, most of our warning signals are aimed at 10:30/11:00 so you can enjoy a leisurely brunch before racing. Run from the Pwllheli bridge start off Gimblet rock, racing is open to all IRC racers, YTC cruisers and sports boats. Fixed and variable courses around the Pwllheli marks, enable a variety of racing from windward and leeward legs, to long reaching legs - something for everyone.
An autumn ball is planned for the 5th October to accompany the series, a chance to discuss your 2024 sailing challenges and successes.

Welcome to this July Edition of the CHPSC Flag Officers Newsletter
I hope everyone has enjoyed some quality time on the water, making use of the limited weather windows we seem to have experienced this year! I know many have embarked on cruises to Ireland and Scotland, and we look forward to hearing all about these.
We had an excellent club Regatta at the end of June shared with the RNLI with a fun race, and a welcome back to the Shannon ALB, with a BBQ and live music after in Plas Heli.
Lots of racing in ISORA and Cork week, and many Dinghy events taking place now, with the ILCA fleet training this week following their Welsh National champs, and we start building up to the two big events in August - the Optimist nationals and GP14 World Championships, with CHIPAC boats entered in this event.
Congratulations to our young team placing 4th in the Royal Yacht Squadron Commodores invitational challenge - it was great being in Cowes supporting the team, lead by team manager George Bird-Jones and skipper Chris Jones.

Crane - the crane will be in daily use now launching and recovery event ribs- can we attempt to keep this area clear to allow us space to get the trailers in. The old Versa Dock should be moved this week, so will free up some parking.
Finally I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of long standing member Patricia Williams last week, and have sent our condolences to former Commodore Gerallt Williams. Further details can be found on the web site.
I wish everyone safe and successful boating, in all its forms, and look forward to some better weather in August, and a chance to catch up in Plas Heli and enjoy hearing about everybody’s adventures.

Clwb Hwylio Pwllheli Sailing Club were once again privileged and delighted to be invited to this prestigious sailing event in Cowes, one of 12 clubs invited to race against the Squadron team. Teams were encouraged to include mixed gender and young sailors. George Bird-Jones once again managed the team selection and planning, and accompanied by PSC Commodore Mark Thompson, went to Cowes to support the team over the three days both on shore and on the water. The J70 team Chris Jones - Skipper and helm, Dave Sharp - trimmer, Gareth Jones-Davies and Morgandie Harrold - Bows and Pit, had prepared very well in the lead up to the event, and sailed superbly over the 11 races, of which 9 were two laps of a windward/Leeward course, and two passage races designed to get the boats back to Cowes from the Race area, which was set at Brambles bank on race day 2 and Osbourne Bay on day 3. Of these 11 races, PSC had a race win and two second places, which was fantastic in a very competative fleet. Overall our team finished in a creditable 4th place, with Morgandie receiving an award for being one of two under 18 year old sailors, and the team receiving an award for representing Wales. I would like to thank Pete and Vicky for allowing the crew to train on Mojito Bach, and extend this to everyone involved in this project over the last 18 months.
With confirmation of our invitation for next year, the team training and selection starts soon!

Pwllheli regatta, welcomes the return of the RNLI ALB

The weekend saw the return of the Shannon class all weather lifeboat to Pwllheli and to mark the occasion Pwllheli Sailing Club, joined by a fleet from sister sailing club South Caernarfonshire Yacht Club (SCYC), formed a welcoming party off the harbour entrance as part of the Pwllheli Regatta.

The SCYC fleet raced from Abersoch to Pwllheli in the morning with the race won by Mike Crompton’s X-yacht, Xpletive.

The two sailing club fleets then combined to join the Pwllheli Regatta fun race. All emphasis was on fun racing with fancy dress and fishing encouraged during racing with the reward of race time reductions. Sadly with winds building to 16kts and clocking right to form a tight reach on the longest leg of the course, any fish about would have been hard pushed to keep up with the boats on the water.

As a result, all focus returned to winning the race with some close competition between Xpletive and Will Partington’s A35 AndromedA. In the end it was another first for Xpletive closely followed by J70 Mojito Bach, with skipper Sam Hall and crew all wearing fancy dress, a selection of women’s floral print midi and maxi dresses akin to a scene from the League of Gentlemen or reminisce of a Monty pythons sketch.

As a result, Andromeda had to settle for third place with Mojito just behind them.

With all crew dressed in a selection of fancy dress, from fruit to Roman guard and Pirate, Mojito claimed that the 3 fishing lines streamed at the back of the boat had slowed them down and the banana and lime costumes made it harder to hoist and trim their sails. Not surprisingly, their efforts gained them the commodores bottle of rum, the prize for the best dressed boat.

In YTC cruiser class, Tim Rouse’s Theia won the race, expertly helmed by daughter Maddie who took them over the finish line 4 minutes ahead of Tamour on the water, nearly 15minutes ahead on corrected time.

Racing finished and it was time to welcome the RNLI back to Pwllheli with flags of all kinds hoisted and decorating the fleet. The Shannon was escorted by the Abersoch and Criccieth lifeboats and welcomed by cheers, flag waving and air horns sounding.

All crews, racing, cruising and RNLI, plus supporters and volunteers then headed into Plas Heli for music by the Jac Dobson band, a BBQ by Sean Devlin together with race results and trophy presentation.
